Although the fifth edition of this textbook underwent a major revision, the development of the sixth edition has been quite a challenge due to the recent proliferation of research knowledge and the advancements made in the treatment of psychiatric mental illness. Since its inception, the goal has been to produce a textbook that addresses the current concepts used in psychiatric mental health nursing to foster competency in practicing nurses and other mental health professionals.

Conversations with various nurse educators and comments by reviewers of the fifth edition helped this author to identify specific content that should be included in this sixth edition of Basic Concepts of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. Consideration was given to the limited amount of time in which nurse educators are able to present psychiatric mental health nursing content.


Student nurses are also challenged as they enter a phase of nursing education in which they are expected to understand the neuropathology or pathophysiology of a psychiatric mental health disorder. They must develop a working knowledge of the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of psychoactive drugs and the potential for drug-drug interactions, because clinical psychopharmacology is an integral part of psychiatric mental health nursing care. Furthermore, students must be given the opportunity to feel competent using crisis intervention techniques because violence has become a common topic affecting the mental health of all age groups.
